From Student to Partner
Or from College Gardener to Partner!
Martin Bartlam, Managing Partner of the London office of leading international law firm, Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe, took time out from his hectic jet-setting schedule to deliver an aspirational talk at Bradford Law School on 8th November. In a fascinating presentation, From Student to Partner: How to Succeed in Practice, he encouraged our law degree students to be ultra ambitious, explaining how to follow in his footsteps and reach the top in a big international firm.
It was also a return to his Bradford roots and a case of from College gardener to partner, as Martin fondly remembers spending 2 summer vacations carefully tending the roses and mowing the large lawns around the McMillan Halls of Residence when he was a student. While Martin’s career has blossomed, the gardens were torn up earlier this year to accommodate our extensive new building, which was completed in summer 2008.
The College’s Head of Law, Darran Chapple said “This was a chance for our students to discuss career opportunities with a prestigious practitioner from a major law firm. We hope this visit from a successful Bradfordian will inspire our students to set their targets at the highest level as well as offer insights into the way law firms recruit and operate.”
