The Legal Practice Course at Leeds Law School

In October 2009, Melissa Askew visited the Law School to give a careers talk on the Legal Practice Course. Melissa is a very experienced Lecturer on the Legal Practice Course at Leeds Metropolitan University Law School who has spent over 5 years working for the Solicitors Regulatory Authority in their educational unit.

The Legal Practice Course (LPC) is the mandatory vocational stage of training for a person wanting to qualify as a solicitor. The focus of the course is professional skills i.e. employablity, ethics and how to advise clients. The LPC consists of core practice areas such as Professional Conduct, Wills, Solicitors Accounts and Taxation as well as electives where students can choose subjects that are of interest to them for example Commercial law, Leases, Employment law, Family law, Clinical Negligence, Company law and Private acquisitions. For more details on the LPC see the Solicitors Regulation Authority website at www.sra.org.uk.

Students have to apply for the LPC in the year before they wish to begin study. Full time students should apply through the CAB (www.lawcabs.ac.uk) before December in the year before they wish to commence the course. Part time students should apply directly through the law school at which they wish to study.

The talk was well attended by students eager to plan out their future careers. All students found the talk useful and were eager to utilise Melissa's experience in an individual Q&A session.
