Bradford Law School students visit the Supreme Court!

On Monday 12th May 2010 two lecturers and 22 students caught a train at the unearthly hour of 7.15am as they ventured to nations capital, London. This was an educational visit to the newly created Supreme Court which also included a little sightseeing and shopping! The trip involved students from all years of our degree programmes, part time and international students.

The tour of the Capital commenced with the exciting opportunity of seeing first hand the Supreme Court in Parliament Square. Once in the court building, the Law School representatives were shown the Privy Council courtroom and subsequently the two main Supreme Court rooms. We then visited the exhibition in the Court building which detailed the history of the building, the creation of the court, and which provides the details of the Justices who sit in our highest appellate court. This was an excellent experience for all the students concerned, especially the year 1 representatives who have recently been studying the English Legal System. It enabled the students to experience for themselves that which they had only previously read about in text books or on web sites.

After visiting the Supreme Court the students were given the opportunity to explore London for themselves. A contingent from year 2 decided to visit Madame Tussauds wax museum. A contingent of part time students decided to go on a sight seeing tour which commenced at Parliament and included Downing Street, the Horse Guards Museum, Trafalgar Square and Nelsons Column, the Mall and finally Buckingham Palace. Unfortunately the Queen was not in residence on the day so we were unable to pop in for afternoon tea!

The third year cohort decided to "do London in a day" and got the most from their London Underground Day Ticket. Of course a group of young ladies could not resist the shops and made their way to Oxford Street.

The group eventually met up in Leicester Square at 17.00 for a meal. Then with a last stretch weary legs, made it back to Kings Cross Station for the train home and arrived back in Bradford in cheerful spirit, just before midnight.
